Science Instructor & FFA Sponsor
I am not sure how to express my excitement to join the Johnson-Brock Public School community. As my family has introduced ourselves to others upon our move to Johnson the responses we hear are, “That is such a great place.”, “Their school is wonderful.”, or something similar. It is such a compliment and makes me even more devoted to be a part of such an exceptional community. During the summer the JBAC, 4H and FFA groups have warmly welcomed us. The caring atmosphere here is hard to match.
Moving here also provides me a feeling of coming back home. I grew up in Dawson, Nebraska and graduated from Dawson-Verdon Consolidated School in 1996. I loved the small town community and the ability to be actively involved in many activities. I am excited for my children Charlotte, a 4th grader, and Noah, a first grader, to have a similar experience.
After graduating from DVHS, I attended Dana College for one year. I was in the Biology program as I wanted to be a veterinarian at that time. After that first year, I transferred to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in their Animal Science program. I discovered a keen interest in animal behavior which led me to transfer to the Psychology Department. As an undergrad I worked in a research lab studying fish with Dr. Alexandra Basolo was able to do field research in Mexico collecting live specimens to return to the laboratory in Lincoln. As an upper classman and upon graduating with a BA in Psychology and minor in Biology, I became a laboratory technician for Dr. Rick Bevins’ Behavioral Neuropharmacology Lab. While working in his lab he asked me to also become a teaching assistant for one of his college courses and that’s when I discovered I should be a teacher.
I began taking classes for my teaching endorsement. I earned my endorsement and a Master’s in Secondary Teaching for Science in 2004. I was then hired at Columbus Middle School. I taught at Columbus Middle School from 2004-2017. While at Columbus, I was a co-sponsor for the CMS Science Quiz Bowl teams and the CMS Science Fair that displayed over 250 projects yearly.
Upon being hired at Johnson-Brock for science and agriculture education, I have begun the process of earning my agriculture education endorsement. In addition to classroom instruction of science and agriculture, I will be the FFA advisor and a co-sponsor for Science Olympiad. My desire is to develop a program that engages the students in science and agriculture that occur directly in this area and beyond. Please, if you have an idea of something you would like to share about your career and its relationship to science and agriculture I would love to hear it.
With all this being shared, perhaps the most important philosophy that both my husband, Marty a probation officer and I both share is that we believe in people. We believe everyone is on a journey. Life is not a test. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow. Practice makes better. If you never made a mistake, then you never tried. We want the best for not just our kids but for everyone on their journey. We are excited to have our journey to have led us here.
