Our school district strives to put the health and wellness needs of our students and staff as a top priority by supporting their needs. Our teachers and staff do an amazing job educating and challenging our students to be the best they can be on a daily basis. Our district also aims to ensure all students know that they are safe and supported while attending school at Johnson-Brock Public Schools.

As stated in our current School Wellness Policy 5052, “The school district is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and the development of lifelong wellness.”  Our wellness team believes that healthy nutrition and daily physical activity sets students up for success by supplying them with energy to get them through their day, as well as helping students stay focused during their academic classes.

We have reviewed our wellness policy as part of the USDA Local Wellness Triennial Assessment requirements. Below are the results of our assessment.

Step #1 - Post results of the wellness policy assessment.

Our three areas of strengths are curriculum promoting physical activity, a staff wellness program and healthy options for breakfast and lunch. Going into more detail, our lunch program provides numerous healthy meals, in addition to students having access to the fruit and salad bar every day for breakfast and lunch. We also offer a “To Go Breakfast” to 6th-12th grade students.  Students in grades PreK 3 eat breakfast in their classroom as a group while K -5th grade students can eat when they get to school at 7:55 until 8:10.

The High School offers a curriculum for courses promoting physical activity that includes a required 7th, 8th and 9th PE class while all students grade 10-12 have opportunities to take a Weights and Lifetime Fitness classes.  These classes meet for 52 minutes every day.

Elementary School also has wellness-based sections in their curriculum. Along with classroom wellness instruction each day, each grade level PreK -6th grade has a 25-minute physical education class every day.  Along with PE, they also have recess 1-2 times during the day where physical activity is mandatory.

Our last strength is our staff involvement with the EHA (Educators Health Alliance) Wellness Program, which promotes health and wellness in the workplace and provides daily emails with nutrition tips and tricks, recipes, and challenges for physical activity, water intake, nutrition and much more.

While reviewing the district wellness policy we found three areas that could use some improvement. Our first area for improvement was to consider educating students on healthier snack choices and what treats they bring in for birthdays or holiday parties.  We will also look at reducing the number of rewards tied to offering food.  For example, ice cream bars for students on the honor roll each quarter.

Step #2 - Post results on progress made in meeting your 3 district wellness policy goals both as

One of the Nutrition Education Goals in the School Wellness Policy is to have water available to students throughout the school day. This goal has been met; students are free to carry a water bottle with them and are encouraged to take them to class. There are also water bottle filling stations located throughout the high school and elementary school that have been added.

Our physical activity goal from the School Wellness Policy was to provide PreK-9th grade students with physical education class every day.  Recess time and PE would not be used as a discipline tool on a regular basis.  We recognize that students need physical activity on a regular basis and encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities like the JBAC program provides our elementary students.

Our final goal we chose to review in the “other students' wellness goals” sections, was to provide students with healthy backpack options and a mental health provider to work with students needing assistance.

We have updated the public of this information by posting it on our school website, presented at a school board meeting and posted on our social media page, as well as the local newspaper.

We want to sincerely thank you for letting us present our findings and we look forward to keeping you up to date with this project. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Wellness Committee Chair Jeff Koehler, Superintendent.

Respectfully,

School Wellness Committee
